Apple picking at Gizdich Ranch

One thing we miss about living on the East Coast is Fall, cooler nights, changing leaves, apple cider and anything pumpkin.  To get into the Fall spirit we decided to head north of Monterey and go apple picking at Gizdich Ranch.  The weather was anything but fall-like with warm temperatures and sunny skies.  None the less, we had a lot of fun picking Macintosh and Golden Delicious apples.  Colin slept most of the time, but it was nice to get him some fresh air. In addition to apple picking Gizdich Ranch is probably better known for their pies.  They make a few varieties of apple and berry pies that can be found around the region.  Kate and I decided to have a slice of Dutch Apple with vanilla ice cream.  Lets just say, not a lot of talking occurred once the pie was delivered. We ended up with several pounds of picked apples by the time we left. We ended up using the apples to make apple sauce and apple butter (see below).  I also promised Kate that I would make my Mom's apple crisp. Now all we need are some pumpkins to carve and we'll be in the fall spirit.
